The automotive industry is critical to the South African economy. The presence of all of the major European, American, and Japanese automobile manufacturers has provided the country with a lot of experience. As a result, the automotive industry plays an increasingly important strategic and catalytic role in the overall South African economy, directly impacting many important economic policy goals such as GDP contribution, employment, skills development, economic linkages, technology, and innovation.
South Africa has a thriving automotive industry, and major international original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) such as Daimler, BMW, Toyota, Volkswagen, Nissan, and Ford build automobiles in the country for both domestic and export markets. Many of these large multinational automotive firms are making significant investments in South Africa, resulting in increased manufacturing.
